One of the most popular TV Sitcoms of all-time was “The Big Bang Theory”. As a running joke, the character Penny was notorious for ignoring the “Check Engine” warning light in her car. To the chagrin and ire of her friends, she covered the light with a sticker so that she, nor anyone else, would see it. For Penny, this was “Problem Solved”.
While this tactic may be funny and tempting, most drivers understand that the warning light isn’t to be ignored. Fausak Tires & Service trained technicians can perform a computer diagnostic check on your vehicle to find the problem and will let you know what it will take to get your car back on the road – and save you money in the long run. Now that really is: PROBLEM SOLVED!
What are computer diagnostics on a car?
Almost every car on the road now has a computer. The car’s computer goes by many names, the most popular being the PCM, or Powertrain Control Module. It is responsible for monitoring the operation of many components, mostly via sensors spread throughout the vehicle. When a system component is operating outside its normal range, this will trigger the PCM to register an error code and if serious enough, to deliver the warning message, aka, dashboard light.
Can’t I just use a code-reader?
Retrieving the error code and looking it up on the internet isn’t the same as having a certified mechanic perform a complete diagnostic check of your vehicle’s computer. There is untold value in having a trained professional backed by years of experience and training determine the cause of the system error and then prescribing the repairs (if needed). No guessing games.
